Description

The Queen of Attolia, with her ink pot. ;)

Megan Whalen Turner's historical fiction adventure series (beginning with The Thief) is a new fave, and its compelled me to do my first fanart in about a year. Although this depicts the Queen, it's inspired by the third novel, King of Attolia, which I just completed.

This is the most work I've put into coloring anything before. It looks pretty simple, yeah, but I did this on a trackball, so everything takes 4 times longer to paint. Sketched on paper [link] , painted in Photoshop.

I was originally just going to draw her with both hands on her hips, looking like the bad ass tyrant that she is, but I couldn't maker her left arm match so I decided to draw her holding an inkpot. Yeah, that inkpot. In my mental fanon, it's made of jade. (I like jade.) I meant for her head to be tilted back more, and her general pose to be more haughty and authoritative, but instead she came out almost scholarly. She actually looks a bit more haughty in the black and white sketch.

When I read the novels, I imagined Attolia as resembling the Greek goddess Pallas Athena, who was ruthless in war and who valued knowledge, progress, and the evolution of cities. In my mind she looked like a tougher, curvier, sturdier version of Keira Knightly: cold but alluring.

Oh, hi, person who can actually draw. I know nothing about these books or the woman in them, but nicely done! I love the hands and the gown. Beautiful.
