Fandom: "Discworld" novel series by Terry Pratchett

Of all the characters on the Discworld, Granny Esmeralda Weatherwax is my favorite. I love all the others like Rincewind and Magrat and Death and Brutha, but ultimately I always go back to Granny Weatherwax for the best giggle. Pretty unusual for a lead character in several novels being that she's a scary old woman... but she's got a mind like metal and is absolutely hilarious and, of course, totally badass. When I'm an old crone I hope I'll be lucky to have half her spirit.

The text is a paraphrase of her favorite opinions about witchery, life, people in general, and headology, of which Esme is an expert.

The work:

This is my second attempt at digital coloring and quite a bit more complicated than my ATLA comic strip, though in both cases I use informal line-art taken directly from my sketch. I like the effect here... gives the face and body some definition but still lets me color and shade with soft strokes.

I am frequently bookmarking useful posts about digital coloring tutorials and advice, but when I start I always forget to look at them. Here I used a basic round paint brush and smudge tool for Granny's coloring, and paint tool plus default Photoshop brushes for the foresty background. I thought Granny deserved a forest background, even one that's mostly just to fill the space.

Last time I swore I wouldn't try digital coloring again until I got a tablet, and my wrist is wishing I hadn't been so impatient. Coloring with a mouse SUCKS DEAD EGGS. It's so inconvenient and limiting.

Edit: Apparently there's some debate over how "witchy" or "crone-like" Granny is supposed to look. A) depends on which book you read first, since she's very different in the first book than in all the others after it, and B) She's an old crone! Yes, she was handsome in her youth, but she's always had a hooked nose and now she's an old crone. I don't participate in the Snapeification of characters and making them more attractive than they are. ::rolls eyes::

I have read it, but I like the Discworld books better. Still, there were several amusing passages in G.O.

Granny's not ugly! She's been described as "handsom," which means she's attractive, but not pretty. She's intense and scary, she's severe, but not ugly!

Other than that, I love to see tribute to her, and the other witches. But she's my favorite of the wtiches. (Of course, I love the dynamic between her and Tiffany.) I love how Pratchett... doesn't really like her, but can't seem to kill her or make her quit. She defies him that way, which shows just how strong a character she is.

Are you complaining that the image portrays her as too unattractive (which I'd argue), or that I called her ugly in my notes?

That you called her ugly in your notes, actually. Since it's Pratchett's own words that she's "handsome".

From my memory of the novels the handsome was more in reference to her youth, and "crone" is the word most frequently implied in her direction at the current timeline, and you don't usually find good-looking crones. It also depends which book you're talking about.

Either way, your interpretation of the book and mine may differ. For me part of the appeal of Granny Weatherwax is that she is an atypical heroine and attractiveness or unattractiveness is part of that distinction. For you this may be different, and that is your choice.

Oh, I"m not knocking you! But "crone" is an age and attitude distinction to me, not an attractiveness scale.
